2003 - The Effects of Ball Burnishing on Silver Castings: Phase II

$0.00

In Phase I, we accumulated a great deal of basic data regarding the effects on surface finish of raw test castings, and found a hardening and reduction to the surface profile. In Phase II we continue to explore the depth of that hardness and the change in the grain microstructure at and below the surface of the castings. Once this data is gathered, we will proceed to mass finishing and hand polishing, comparing weight loss of the as-finished product to those that were hand polished by conventional methods. The ultimate question that needs to be answered is, "Can we achieve as good, or better, finished products with less weight loss by preceding conventional finishing with ball burnishing?"
