Soldering is perhaps the most critical skill in jewelry making. Yet, for many it is also the most misunderstood. Practitioners at all levels have internalized many myths about soldering, such as "You must keep the flame moving while soldering," and "You must heat the whole piece in order to solder." Although each myth may contain a kernel of truth, that truth is misapprehended or misapplied by even the most experienced jewelers, frequently confounding the process. This paper demystifies soldering by separating common soldering myths from reality and establishes three essential criteria for choosing the best methods and tools for any soldering job. By taking the guesswork out of soldering, the author strives to make it, if not foolproof, at least much easier and more enjoyable for practitioners at every level.
