2017 - Analysis of Packaging Materials’ Role in Corrosion Control of Jewelry

There are no standards in the jewelry industry for sulfur content in packaging, and there are limited tools for analyzing the impact of tray materials and packaging materials on controlling corrosion (tarnish) on jewelry in storage or transport. This paper will review results from various corrosion studies including Mixed Flowing Gas (MFG) and climatic chambers to analyze the impact of various packaging materials and designs and the impact that material selection has on the tarnishing of metals commonly used in jewelry manufacturing. Additionally, a modified Mixed Flowing Gas test that can be set up by jewelry manufacturers will be reviewed.
